Greens say “No Pact with Lib Dems”

In the face of speculation over a possible electoral arrangement with the Liberal Democrats, Cllr John Coyne announced the firm decision of Liverpool Green Party to say “No” to any such pact.

It had been suggested that opposition parties should stand aside for each other in some wards so that a single opposition candidate could challenge the incumbent Labour councillor, but the Greens say they will be fighting in all 30 wards in Liverpool.

Cllr Coyne said “I can see the reasoning behind having a single challenger to defeat Joe Anderson’s candidate in some wards and it would be very valuable to give him another shock to show he cannot get away with building on Liverpool’s parks. However, the Lib Dems need to be defeated, too, over national issues like government cuts and the Bedroom Tax.”

Martin Dobson who is the Green Party MP candidate for Liverpool Riverside added “The Lib Dems are responsible for backing a Government that has supported harsh austerity measures whilst the richest one percent of the population have got richer. We cannot do deals with a party that has acted in this way for five years”

Jean Hill who is fighting Warbreck Ward for the Greens said: “The Lib Dems are no longer a credible party in North Liverpool. It is the Greens who are now the fastest growing political party, both locally and countrywide. We have the momentum to mount a challenge to the Mayor and Labour Party in this city.”
