Green Mayoral candidate reveals plans to create a ‘Scouse Pound’

Green party mayoral candidate, Cllr Tom Crone is calling for the creation of a new local currency called the “Liverpool Pound”.

This new currency would work alongside, rather than replace pounds sterling, but could only be spent with participating businesses based in Liverpool.

The move is backed by a Liverpool University academic and expert in alternative currencies as a way to help the local economy.

Cllr Crone, who leads the Green group on Liverpool council, told the ECHO: “As mayor, I will work tirelessly to support and promote local, independent companies. People in Liverpool are rightly proud of their city and want to play a part in its continued revival.

Tom explained “A local currency would stick to Liverpool, so every Liverpool Pound that gets spent will stay in the city to be spent in another local business. This is a great way to support the local economy.”
