On Friday morning many of us woke up with a feeling of profound loss as the Referendum result came in. Our children will not now have the opportunity to know the Europe we grew up with, or to be European citizens in an international world. I’m immensely proud to know that my city, with its proud international history, voted to remain.
Only a very small proportion of people ever get involved in politics beyond actual voting. If you are feeling this way I’d urge you to take action. We now face the fight of our lifetime as a Conservative Party (with no elected representation in Liverpool) becomes indistinguishable from UKIP.
The politicians who will take control of the government after this referendum include those who want to scrap the NHS, strip away hard won workers’ rights and who deny the reality of our impact on global climate. They must be stopped.
We can’t let this referendum result turn Britain into a deregulated, globalised 51st American state of increased inequality and no welfare state. We need to make our country one we can be proud of and that is something we are going to have to fight for, harder than ever before.
I’d urge people to get involved in politics, campaigning and your community, and to fight for a better future in response to this result.
