Green Party welcome Allerton Priory decision but warn there’s plenty more in the pipeline
The Green Party have welcomed the decision to recommend refusal of developer’s Redrow application to build houses on Greenspace at Allerton Priory.
Cllr Tom Crone, the Green’s candidate for Metro Mayor, expressed his delight with the news
‘This is clear evidence that Labour is feeling the heat on Liverpool’s green spaces. Liverpool people will not stand by and let much loved greenspaces be taken away from our communities.‘
Councillor Crone was quick to warn that further battles lay ahead and Labour’s opposition to the plans on this occasion need to be matched across the city, they will have hard job convincing people that they care about greenspace.
‘The Labour leadership have shown time and again that they have no regard for the many parts of the city’s greenspace, seeing it as nothing more than a development opportunity. Council owned green spaces at Harthill Road and Sefton Park Meadows have been earmarked for housing by Labour and campaigners have had to fight long and hard to save Walton Hall Park from Labour backed redevelopment plans. Greenspace on Lodge Lane has been redesignated as development land, part of Woolton Woods has been built on and plans have been submitted to chop down 40 mature trees on the council owned Victoria Street car park to make way for an ugly multi storey car park, right in the heart of Liverpool’s World Heritage site.’
‘The simple fact is, Labour cannot be trusted with the city’s parks, trees and greenspaces. By pressing the planners to recommend refusal of this application, we can see that they have realised public opposition is too strong to ignore this time.‘
