Cllr Tom Crone, the Green Party Candidate for Liverpool City Region Metro-Mayor, has signed the Friends of the Earth Mayoral Pledge, committing to ambitious, urgent and meaningful action on climate and nature.

As Friends of the Earth say, “We’re facing a climate and ecological emergency – the biggest threat we’ve ever seen to humanity’s existence. Whoever is elected as the next Mayor of Liverpool City Region can’t single-handedly solve the crisis, but they must use the powers they have to make as big a difference as possible. They have a very important role to play in providing a guiding vision for the area, and will need to work with councils, businesses, local communities and the national government.”

Cllr Tom Crone wholeheartedly agrees, and has already promised to put the environment and sustainable living at the centre of his campaign and of his time as mayor, should he be elected.

The 10 priorities, as laid out by Friends of the Earth, are below, and you can read more about them on the Friends of the Earth website here.

If you want to see a greener, fairer mayor looking out for everyone in the Liverpool City Region, please donate to Tom’s election Crowdfunder here.

10 priorities for the next Mayor

  1. Ensure all plans, programmes and investment decisions are in line with what’s needed to address the climate and ecological emergency and are aligned with international, national, regional and local carbon reduction targets.
  2. Ensure that the voices of those most impacted by climate breakdown and nature loss are heard and given centre-stage in decision making.
  3. Support new green jobs. Protect workers and communities through a just transition to a low-carbon, nature-rich, circular economy, including linking skills training to low-carbon jobs.
  4. Ensure new housing is zero carbon and served by sustainable transport using their strategic planning powers and influence on constituent local planning authorities. Use brownfield regeneration and affordable housing funding to deliver zero-carbon homes in locations accessible by public transport and active travel.
  5. Take a leading role in bringing existing homes in the area up to high energy efficiency standards to reduce emissions and put an end to fuel poverty. Ensure that existing homes are protected from extreme weather events including heatwaves and floods.
  6. Set targets and strategies to double public transport use, cycling and walking within the next 10 years, and set out a plan to achieve World Health Organization (WHO) air quality standards by 2030. Step up action to meet these targets, including investing in the right infrastructure and working with operators to ensure that public transport services are reliable, affordable and better connected.
  7. Lead the further development and implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP), with an emphasis on increasing the supply of clean, renewable energy, including supporting community energy initiatives and urgently increasing the roll-out of heat pumps.
  8. Ensure that the Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) being developed for the area increases tree cover, protects and enhances nature, eliminates green space deprivation, and helps the area become more resilient to the impacts of climate change.
  9. Lead the development of a circular economy strategy for the area with local businesses and local authorities to both cut waste and resource consumption and boost the green economy.
  10. Tackle climate and community-damaging emissions originating from all forms of transport (including shipping) in the Liverpool City Region Freeport. Ensure the Freeport contributes to the 2040 net zero target with genuine investment in low-carbon activities.

Thanks to Green Party members and supporters across the region, the Crowdfunder appeal to support Cllr Tom Crone’s election campaign to be elected Liverpool City Region Metro-Mayor has reached the halfway mark.

With a target of £3,000, the fund currently stands at £1,600. Tom and the team would like to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has donated so far.

Tom says:

“I am standing for Metro-Mayor because I want to see a fairer, greener, better Liverpool City region.

As a Green, I know that you can’t fix the environment without also fixing our communities, and I know that only the Green Party has the policies to tackle both these challenges head on.

For example, an expanded home insulation program that will save people money on their bills lifting many out of fuel poverty. Training in the green jobs of the future so people are ready to be part of the transition to net zero. And a properly joined up public transport and active travel network making travel easier and cleaner around the city region.

With a bold green vision and a renewed democratic culture, Liverpool City Region will be among the best places to live in Europe.”

If you haven’t made a donation yet, but are able to, please help us get Greens elected here.

Cllr Tom Crone, the Green Party Candidate for Liverpool City Region Metro-Mayor needs your help:

In just over a month, voters across Liverpool City Region will elect a Combined Authority (Metro) Mayor.

This election campaign is a fantastic opportunity to reach every voter in the City Region. People are desperate for a positive vision of a better future, where inequality is being tackled and our lifestyles aren’t trashing the planet.

Donate to help get Tom elected here.

Only the Greens have got the policies and the commitment to take on these twin challenges, and this election provides a massive opportunity to grasp the initiative and promote our policies.

It is, however, an expensive business. Having an entry in the election booklet that is sent to every elector costs £4,200. We also need to raise a £5,000 deposit to take part in the election. That is why I am urging you to support our Crowdfunder campaign. Every little helps, so please click the link and help out.

The Green Party don’t have any corporate backers; we depend on our passionate members and supporters to do everything we do, so please take a few moments to help us fund this exciting campaign.

All donations, big or small will make a huge difference. Donate here.

Thanks

Tom Crone

The Green Party have selected Cllr Amanda Onwuemene as their candidate for Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner, and Cllr Tom Crone as their candidate for Liverpool City Region Combined Authority Mayor.

Amanda is the Green Party’s national spokesperson for Policing and Domestic Violence and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and insight into the role. Amanda acknowledges the recent positive review received by Merseyside Police, but believes there is still a need for more progress on the Service’s approach to policing for women and girls, as well as police relations with vulnerable communities.

As a Green party PCC, she would work with the Chief Constable to ensure the much needed progress in these areas is delivered.

Tom leads the Green Party Group on Liverpool Council, and has ten years experience as a Councillor to draw on. He wants to deliver his vision of a fairer, greener, better Liverpool City Region.

With an expanded home insulation program, training opportunities in the green jobs of the future, and improved public transport and active travel, we can start to tackle poverty and inequality while delivering on our commitments to get to net zero.

These two candidates are committed to working together to stand up for disadvantaged and marginalised people within the city region, and driving forward the Green Economy to deliver a fairer, more democratic, and more positive future for Liverpool City region and Merseyside.

You can help Amanda and Tom deliver real change for the region and its communities by joining the Green Party today or making a donation to help with campaigning.

Bye bye £28 billion of green investment a year.

So Labour has ditched its flagship election pledge – the same week as climate scientists announced the planet breached 1.5 degrees for the whole of 2023.

It’s bad for the climate, economy, and future generations. But Keir Starmer has bowed to the Tory party’s cynical attacks and put short term political goals ahead of the wellbeing of people and planet.

It is clear that only the Green Party can be trusted to stand up for ambitious action in parliament to build a fairer, greener country.

Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party, said:

“This is a massive backward step – for the climate, for the economy and for good quality jobs. Both the security of our planet for future generations and the UK’s future prosperity is dependent on greening our economy and that requires large scale investment.”

The good news is support for our Green MPs, Sian, Carla, Adrian and Ellie is growing in their constituencies, and Liverpool’s Green Party Councillors Martyn Madeley, John Howard and Tom Crone continue to deliver real change for their wards.

But we need your help to keep the pressure up on the bigger parties nationally and withstand their attacks so our candidates can win when a general election is called. Plus, our work locally must continue, so communities across the city, region and nation can add their voices to the Green revolution.

Please help support our work locally and nationally with a donation to the Green Part today.

Large or small, every penny helps us protect the planet for everyone’s future.

The Liverpool Green Party is looking for a new Chair. This an ideal opportunity for you to make a real difference to the city, socially, politically and environmentally.

We are looking for someone who has experience chairing or managing meetings and helping a group coordinate their activities for maximum impact.

The Chair will help support our three City Councillors to deliver real change in the city, and you in turn will be supported by members of the LGP. If you’ve never chaired anything before, but feel you have relevant experience and enthusiasm, we’d still like to hear from you. The Chair is just one member of the Liverpool Greens team where everyone works together to further our common goals.

This is a crucial time for Liverpool: metro mayor elections; a general election looming, and in the longer run, the council elections where we have a realistic hope of expanding our numbers.

This is an opportunity for you to make a huge difference to our city.

If you feel you have the skills, enthusiasm and experience for the role we want to hear from you.

To find out more about the role, and have an informal chat, email us at office@liverpool.greenparty.org.uk

Outgoing Chair Maria Coughlan said: “I have truly enjoyed my time as Chair of Liverpool Greens, working with the great team we’ve built. Together we were able to deliver real progress for the Greens in the city, and now we are looking to you to help us build on this success and be a real force for change in Liverpool.”

Cllr Tom Crone has been listening to the concerns of local residents regarding Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) in the St Michaels area, and has launched a petition to make sure local people’s views are heard.

“I have been contacted by several residents regarding the increasing number of HMO conversions taking place in St Michaels,” said Cllr Crone. “Frustratingly, anyone can convert a house in St Michaels into an HMO for up to 5 people without planning permission. In other areas of the city the rules were changed recently to require planning permission. This has helped to reduce the number of HMOs being developed there.

“I am demanding that our area is included in this scheme so residents here can have a say in the future of our neighbourhood.”

If you agree, sign our petition here: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stronger-planning-controls-on-hmos-in-st-michaels-and-sefton-park

Cllr Martyn Madeley has been monitoring the progress of repairs and upgrades to the bridge on Queens Drive where we had the tragic flooding incident earlier in the year.

He is happy to report that work to improve the road surface, flood warning signage and drainage have been completed at the site. We are currently waiting for flood sensors to arrive and to be fitted as well as an improvement of the lighting under the bridge before it can be reopened.

Cllr Martyn Madeley said “I am glad that these works have been undertaken, it is just a shame it took a tragedy for the council to step up and sort out this section of road which has been an issue for years”.

The initial works are set to be complete within 12 weeks, and further works are planned in the medium term. The council would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience and understanding while these vital improvement works are completed.

Cllr John Howard, council officers, and the Lark Lane Neighbourhood Association have been working together to find solutions to issues arising from changes in Lark Lane during & after lockdown, & hopefully start to solve these issues.

Proposed solutions include:

1) Physical re-design of the Lane: £1 million secured to change physical infrastructure on the Lane. Officers drew up initial sets of plans which residents have commented on & redrafts for public consultation underway. Ideas considered include: widening pavements making bollarded areas permanent, safer & accessible; speed tables at junctions; better cycle infrastructure.

2) Cumulative impact licensing: John gathered a petition submitted at full council calling for cumulative impact licensing (which considers what shops/bars an area already has lots of etc.) to be brought back on the Lane. Hopefully this will halt the rising number of loud late-night bars. “It’s about balancing local businesses’ need to attract people with what is also residential area.”

3) Public meeting with council officers: It was arranged that officers met directly with local residents to discuss issues like noise, licensing breeches & litter that the physical redesign alone won’t solve. As a result, some new approaches will be tested including alternative litter picking methods, & predictive redistribution of parking officers during events in the park. John said “I’m constantly telling officers about these issues residents report so it was great they got chance to tell officers directly about how important these issues are & how to realistically solve them.”

If you would like to speak to John about this issue, contact him at John.Howard@liverpool.gov.uk
