The election is just a couple of weeks away and here at Liverpool Greens we have been working hard on our election campaign.

We are very pleased to have candidates standing in every Liverpool constituency.

Who are the candidates?

Liverpool Wavertree – Tom Crone
Tom Crone

Councillor Tom Crone has been holding Liverpool Labour to account since he got elected in 2014. He is a self-employed Energy Advisor and his wife is a frontline NHS worker.

He says: “I am excited by the proposals in our manifesto and proud to represent a national political party offering a real alternative. Keir Starmer’s Labour Party are matching the Tories in too many ways, watering down previous commitments and flip-flopping on important policies.

“A vote for the Green Party will send a powerful message to Keir Starmer that he needs to be bolder to achieve the vital transition to a Green economy and creating a fairer Britain for all.”

Liverpool West Derby – Maria Coughlan
Maria Coughlan
Maria has lived in Liverpool all her life. Raised by her widowed mother, she experienced poverty first hand. That was back in the 1960s, but sadly today, after both Labour and Conservative Governments, not much has changed. Child poverty is at an all-time high, the NHS is at risk, and climate change is a real threat to our planet.

Maria worked in social housing for over 30 years, helping the most vulnerable in society keep a roof over their head. Twenty-five years as Presiding Justice on the Liverpool Magistrates’ Bench has given Maria first-hand experience of the impact of crime, addiction, and domestic abuse on our great city.

If elected, Maria is determined to champion the rights of West Derby residents. She will be relentless in making sure your views are not only heard in Parliament, but are acted upon. We cannot sit back and hope for change. We have to act now and vote Green.

Liverpool Riverside – Chris Coughlan
Chris Coughlan
Chris is a retired Project Manager and former labour member until converting to the Green Party over five years ago having recognised and acknowledged the widening cavern between both parties.

He lives in Liverpool City Centre and is a life long Everton fan but please don’t hold that against him.

Liverpool Walton – Martyn Madeley
Martyn Madeley
Martyn has been a Green campaigner for over 10 years. He completed a degree in Environmental Science since moving to Liverpool.

He now works in a materials analysis company as a Laboratory Technician while being the Councillor for Greenbank Park Ward on Liverpool City Council.

Liverpool Garston and Halewood – Muryam Sheikh
Muryam says “The Green Party needs more members to stand as an option for people to choose from on a ballot paper at the elections, rather than just the other well-funded parties. And as we need as many as possible willing to stand I felt it was my duty as a mixed heritage person to do so too. I would love to see more Greens as an option on ballot papers nationwide, so we can push for a better, cleaner, fairer future for everyone, with more exposure to help highlight our policies and the party as a whole.”

Our manifesto

All of Liverpool’s Green Party parliamentary candidates are in full support of and committed to the national Green Party manifesto. Read up on some of the Green Party’s plans below:

Bye bye £28 billion of green investment a year.

So Labour has ditched its flagship election pledge – the same week as climate scientists announced the planet breached 1.5 degrees for the whole of 2023.

It’s bad for the climate, economy, and future generations. But Keir Starmer has bowed to the Tory party’s cynical attacks and put short term political goals ahead of the wellbeing of people and planet.

It is clear that only the Green Party can be trusted to stand up for ambitious action in parliament to build a fairer, greener country.

Carla Denyer, co-leader of the Green Party, said:

“This is a massive backward step – for the climate, for the economy and for good quality jobs. Both the security of our planet for future generations and the UK’s future prosperity is dependent on greening our economy and that requires large scale investment.”

The good news is support for our Green MPs, Sian, Carla, Adrian and Ellie is growing in their constituencies, and Liverpool’s Green Party Councillors Martyn Madeley, John Howard and Tom Crone continue to deliver real change for their wards.

But we need your help to keep the pressure up on the bigger parties nationally and withstand their attacks so our candidates can win when a general election is called. Plus, our work locally must continue, so communities across the city, region and nation can add their voices to the Green revolution.

Please help support our work locally and nationally with a donation to the Green Part today.

Large or small, every penny helps us protect the planet for everyone’s future.

The Liverpool Green Party is looking for a new Chair. This an ideal opportunity for you to make a real difference to the city, socially, politically and environmentally.

We are looking for someone who has experience chairing or managing meetings and helping a group coordinate their activities for maximum impact.

The Chair will help support our three City Councillors to deliver real change in the city, and you in turn will be supported by members of the LGP. If you’ve never chaired anything before, but feel you have relevant experience and enthusiasm, we’d still like to hear from you. The Chair is just one member of the Liverpool Greens team where everyone works together to further our common goals.

This is a crucial time for Liverpool: metro mayor elections; a general election looming, and in the longer run, the council elections where we have a realistic hope of expanding our numbers.

This is an opportunity for you to make a huge difference to our city.

If you feel you have the skills, enthusiasm and experience for the role we want to hear from you.

To find out more about the role, and have an informal chat, email us at office@liverpool.greenparty.org.uk

Outgoing Chair Maria Coughlan said: “I have truly enjoyed my time as Chair of Liverpool Greens, working with the great team we’ve built. Together we were able to deliver real progress for the Greens in the city, and now we are looking to you to help us build on this success and be a real force for change in Liverpool.”

Cllr Tom Crone has been listening to the concerns of local residents regarding Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) in the St Michaels area, and has launched a petition to make sure local people’s views are heard.

“I have been contacted by several residents regarding the increasing number of HMO conversions taking place in St Michaels,” said Cllr Crone. “Frustratingly, anyone can convert a house in St Michaels into an HMO for up to 5 people without planning permission. In other areas of the city the rules were changed recently to require planning permission. This has helped to reduce the number of HMOs being developed there.

“I am demanding that our area is included in this scheme so residents here can have a say in the future of our neighbourhood.”

If you agree, sign our petition here: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/stronger-planning-controls-on-hmos-in-st-michaels-and-sefton-park

Cllr Martyn Madeley has been monitoring the progress of repairs and upgrades to the bridge on Queens Drive where we had the tragic flooding incident earlier in the year.

He is happy to report that work to improve the road surface, flood warning signage and drainage have been completed at the site. We are currently waiting for flood sensors to arrive and to be fitted as well as an improvement of the lighting under the bridge before it can be reopened.

Cllr Martyn Madeley said “I am glad that these works have been undertaken, it is just a shame it took a tragedy for the council to step up and sort out this section of road which has been an issue for years”.

The initial works are set to be complete within 12 weeks, and further works are planned in the medium term. The council would like to thank motorists and residents for their patience and understanding while these vital improvement works are completed.

Cllr John Howard, council officers, and the Lark Lane Neighbourhood Association have been working together to find solutions to issues arising from changes in Lark Lane during & after lockdown, & hopefully start to solve these issues.

Proposed solutions include:

1) Physical re-design of the Lane: £1 million secured to change physical infrastructure on the Lane. Officers drew up initial sets of plans which residents have commented on & redrafts for public consultation underway. Ideas considered include: widening pavements making bollarded areas permanent, safer & accessible; speed tables at junctions; better cycle infrastructure.

2) Cumulative impact licensing: John gathered a petition submitted at full council calling for cumulative impact licensing (which considers what shops/bars an area already has lots of etc.) to be brought back on the Lane. Hopefully this will halt the rising number of loud late-night bars. “It’s about balancing local businesses’ need to attract people with what is also residential area.”

3) Public meeting with council officers: It was arranged that officers met directly with local residents to discuss issues like noise, licensing breeches & litter that the physical redesign alone won’t solve. As a result, some new approaches will be tested including alternative litter picking methods, & predictive redistribution of parking officers during events in the park. John said “I’m constantly telling officers about these issues residents report so it was great they got chance to tell officers directly about how important these issues are & how to realistically solve them.”

If you would like to speak to John about this issue, contact him at John.Howard@liverpool.gov.uk

After the council wavered on previous promises, Cllr Tom Crone has got the leader and administration to commit to the Fields in Trust (FIT) project in full.

FIT is a charity which seeks to protect 100 green spaces around Liverpool forever including not only the 20 or so major parks, but also 80 other small green spaces round the city.

Tom said ”At one point there was doubt about whether even the major parks part of the scheme would go ahead, let alone the other smaller green spaces, but we have now been given that commitment.”
Without Cllr Crone’s efforts the FIT project would still be stalled.

Previously, a lot of work towards FIT was done by retired Cllr, Lawrence Brown. Lawrence said “May I thank everyone who has wished me well with progress on my health issues. Since retiring as a councillor I have continued to pursue some matters that are important to me. In particular, I have been helping colleagues to hold the Council to account by protecting 100 green spaces across the city, forever. Some mixed messages suggested this commitment may be watered down but I’m hopeful that it will be met in full. Happy New Year to all residents!”

Pictured above is Cllr Crone at Dingle Vale Rec, one of the smaller green spaces soon to be protected by FIT. In areas of dense housing, small green spaces are vital oases, that need protecting.
